What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system.
It helps organizations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, gaining a competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders. Therefore, organizations implementing ISO 14001, profit:
- enhancement of environmental performance;
- fulfillment of compliance obligations;
- achievement of environmental objectives.
What is ISO 14001 concerned?
An environmental management system established fulfilling the requirements of ISO 14001:2015, helps organizations identify, manage, monitor and control their environmental issues in a “holistic” manner.
Which type of companies ISO 14001 apply?
ISO 14001:2015 is applicable to any organization, regardless of size, type and nature, and applies to the environmental aspects of its activities, products and services that the organization determines it can either control or influence considering a life cycle perspective. ISO 14001:2015 does not state specific environmental performance criteria.
What ISO 50001 concerned?
The purpose of the energy specific standard ISO 50001 consists in establishing systems and processes necessary to improve the energy related performance. Use of the standards is to help energy management to systematically contribute to reducing energy consumption, energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions or other environmental impacts. The systematic approach can be found in the organization’s energy management. Based on energy policy and the definition of the strategic and operational goals, action plans will be planned, implemented and assessed.
Austrian Energy Agency estimates the average energy saving potentials to be between 10 and 20 per cent. The standards can be integrated in existing management systems such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Which type of companies ISO 50001 apply?
Basically energy management can be conducted by companies and organizations independently from the size or sector. For energy intensive companies, in particular, the standards offer comprehensive systematic requirements and guides for successful implementation. As for small and medium-sized enterprises, the standards initiate them in environmental management with a focus on the partial area of energy. As for companies with an existing environmental management system, the standards can contribute to focusing on the environmental factor of energy even more.
Why companies should seek ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certification?
Like other ISO management system standards, certification to ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 is possible but not obligatory. Some organizations decide to implement these standards solely for the benefits it provides. Others decide to get certified, to show external parties they have implemented an environment and/or energy management system. Lately the certification towards these two standards has become a requirement for doing business in many regions or industries.
